Meet The Recruiter: Cheryl Stobo

How did you get in to recruitment?

I graduated University in 2014 with a first-class honors degree in HR, with no desire to go into a standard HR role. I was one of the very rare people who didn’t just fall into recruitment! I actually made a conscious choice to join the industry by doing lots of research and applying to graduate traineeships in my final year. I had my last exam on a Friday and found myself sitting on my first recruitment desk on the Monday!

What was your dream job as a child?

I used to want to be a lawyer, and then quickly realised that wasn’t for me! Recruitment attracted me eventually as I liked the idea of being able to use the people skills I learned at Uni and from four years of working behind a busy bar, being able to become a valued commodity of some of the UK’s biggest brands and not necessarily being sat behind a desk 24/7 either.

I love being out and about – going to different industry networking, organising client entertainments or going on candidate coffee meetings.

How do you commute?

I am lucky enough to sit in traffic for over an hour every day on the bus. I am hoping to move into my first flat in the city centre soon so looking forward to being able to walk to work and not have to worry about missing the last bus home if I go for some after-work drinks!   

What does a typical day look like?

They say no day is the same in recruitment, despite having your standard core hour plans, this very much applies. Most of my time is spent either taking briefs from clients or meeting with candidates. I work in a market where candidate quality is very important, so I spend most of my time getting to know the candidates I am working with.

Other than that, it is your standard things like going through advert responses, messages on Linkedin, sourcing live jobs or planning how to get on new jobs! I like to try mix things up a little and go on some lunches or after work events to keep it interesting.

What’s the best part of your job?

I genuinely do enjoy helping people find their new job and coaching them through each step. I also like the cliché of saying I get to meet new people every day and get to do lots of fun networking and activities. My work is known for organizing lots of fun days internally and I love getting involved in the latest activities – I am still a proud HR Consultancy Star Baker of 2016!

What’s been your biggest success so far?

I would say either the standard answer of graduating University or the success as I have had in the real professional world the last 3 years. I am very proud to have become a credible recruiter in my field and part of the HRC family. I have built up great working relationships with my team and made great friends at HRC, so feel very lucky to be happy in my job when I know how hard the graduate job market can be.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I try and go to the gym every now and again with one of my friends here at HRC, and have recently taken a liking to Hot Yoga (although I am known for going through fitness fads and moving on to the next new thing). A truer reflection of myself is spending time with friends and family. I love to go out for nice dinners, so I am always eating out!

I also enjoy trying new gins and finding new gin bars around Glasgow to visit. I go to lots of gigs and festivals with my friends, and also love going on several holidays or city breaks throughout the year! If I am not doing this then I binge watch box sets on Netflix or chill out.

What is most important to you?

Family and friends – recruitment is a busy job, where you work long hours, so I really value having a supportive family, great boyfriend and the best friends you could ask for! I have had the same group of friends since school and believe it or not, the twelve of us are all still as close as ever.

I have also been lucky to make new lifelong friends that I have met at other stages of my life. My family also mean the world to me. I always make sure to spend as much time as I can be doing something fun with them. I am known for squeezing in as much stuff as I possibly can into the 48 hours of the weekend!
