Recruiting for Temp Workers in Office Services

The temp market within Office Services is an incredibly fast-paced one. Whether it’s holiday cover, long term sickness or maternity leave affecting current staffing levels, it can be difficult to know where to source the best talent at short notice. Many businesses have had bad experiences using recruitment agencies in the past, and feel unable to place their trust in another recruiter.

I’ve built up a successful temp desk here at HR Consultancy, having cut my teeth in the aggressively paced hospitality recruitment industry. I realise that good candidates move quickly, therefore recruiters and clients have to work together at a similar speed in order to ensure the best talent meets the right office.

Temp workers are designed to fill in at the last minute; to pick up systems and processes on day one and help keep your business running smoothly in the short term. Owing to the high calibre candidates I regularly source, I tend to base my talent sourcing on attitude rather than skills set. I will get to know a business – even spending time on site to get a feel for the office and the environment – to ensure that the candidates I put forward represent an accurate culture fit.

The recruitment process at temp level – whilst quicker – is no less bespoke. Whilst temp candidates may not tick every box in the way that a permanent candidate would, I would never place an unsuitable candidate in your business if I knew that the match wasn’t going to be a success.

Many of my clients place complete faith in me to perform CV checks and interviews on candidates – simply sending them the finished product on the day they are due to take up their post. Because my clients know that I pay attention to their business needs and type of working environment, they know that I will send forward candidates who are able to ‘hit the ground running’.

However, in order to secure these talented temp workers, it is crucial that clients are able to provide me with feedback relatively quickly. As I said, these candidates move quickly so, if they don’t hear from you, they may well receive an offer from another interested employer. A swift turnaround also means I can provide a high standard of service to my candidates, who are always keen to find out whether or not they have been successful in their pursuit of work.

I always provide excellent after care for my candidates. I will prepare them thoroughly and check in with them the night before they are due to start. Once they have settled in, I will give them a call after a few days to ensure that everything is running smoothly. I definitely don’t ‘dump’ candidates on a business. For me, even if the temp contract is for just a few days, I like to hear about successful placements.
