Meet The Recruiter: Jackie Shields
1 September 2017
How did you get in to recruitment?
I graduated with a 2:1 honours degree in Tourism and International Marketing. I then worked in Vancouver in hotel management (front desk receptionist, hotel supervisor to front desk management). When I returned to Scotland last August I got a job in temporary hospitality recruitment which required me to have 6 months hospitality experience - and the rest is history.
What was your dream job as a child?
Singer! It still is! I have auditioned for X Factor and Britain's Got Talent - with no success. As much as I love to sing, it’s possibly one of the most nerve wracking things I have ever done in front of people. I get so nervous
How do you commute?
By bus - it's £94 for a 10 week bus pass from Partick.
What does a typical day look like?
I have a lot of BD on my desk as I’m growing it and that’s the nature of temp recruitment.
- 9am – 10am – CV reviewing, speaking to candidates, candidate interviews
- 10 – 12 – BD
- 12 – 1 lunch
- 1 – 2 candidate interviews, posting adverts, doing any admin for new placements, checking in with registered candidates
- 2-4 – BD
- 4 – 5.30pm – candidates regs, making sure candidates booked to start are good to go, writing adverts
All that being said, if I get new jobs in, I work until that job is filled and my daily plan takes a back seat.
What’s the best part of your job?
Meeting fantastic people. I love meeting people from all walks of life. I love my team and being surrounded by big personalities.
What’s been your biggest success so far?
Graduating with a 2:1 honours degree.
I moved to live in Canada for three years, six days after I graduated in 2013. I left my life in Scotland behind, started up in a completely new country, and then realised Scotland is my home. I packed up my life in Canada and came to restart my wonderful life in Glasgow. It changed me as a person, as it made me realise that life is all about taking risks.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I travel solo, all my money goes towards flights to new parts of the world (San Francisco, New York, Vietnam, Thailand, Warsaw, Berlin). The best feeling in this world is getting off a plane and getting lost in a new place!
I run, I enjoy running three times a week. I’m a big foodie, eating out and experiencing new cuisine. I also like to go for a good hike. I enjoy singing and going to festivals (sometimes I get to work at them too, thanks to my hospitality connections). I love going to comedy gigs - humour is so important to me. And, lastly, I enjoy partying at the weekends.
What is most important to you?
Meeting people – I love to share stories with interesting people. I love meeting folk with the same sense of humour. It is my favourite thing about living.
My friends – They are my life! I absolutely adore them
Describe yourself in three words.
Energetic. Loving. Free.
