Technology and The HR Market

It’s no secret that, in order for companies to remain competitive, they have to move with the times. We’ve swapped letters for emails; the phone book for Google and paper forms for electronic ones. Technology is becoming an increasingly bigger part of our working lives. We’ve become totally reliant on it for several elements of our jobs.
The HR industry is no exception to this. And, as The HR Review puts it, with technology comes “the pressure to continually innovate, not only to generate new revenue streams but also to attract and retain talent … Technology is responsible for staggering improvements to many aspects of working life, but it also creates the challenge of having to restructure businesses around these disruptive changes.”
Yes, the impact of technology is inescapable, and it affects how a HR employee will conduct their daily workload. Here are just some of the ways new and emerging technologies are impacting on HR processes.
Online job boards, emails and Skype interviews are just some examples of how technology has impacted upon the recruitment process. Gone are the days where invites to interview would be sent out on headed paper. The process is now streamlined as much as possible to make everything much more straightforward, including uploading CVs or interviewing via an online portal. This is particularly crucial for businesses who have a high turnover.
Businesses who are target driven will often use a performance management system wherein information about an employee is readily available. The software metrics make it easy for a HR department to analyse performance and raise awareness about any issues. If there are repeated red flags around any one employee, HR can intervene and perhaps offer additional support or learning. Systems like this can also be used to gain employee feedback which can contribute towards creating a productive working environment.
Systems like Skype make it possible to train new starts or existing employees remotely. Online learning (in the form of presentations or exams) also make it possible for a HR employee to reach a large number of staff at any one time. This is efficient and saves a business money on any travel costs for the HR trainer in question – staff can simply be reached at the click of a button. Virtual learning environments are also a good way to assess staff and keep track of their progress during a particular training course.
HR is an industry that is typically associated with huge volumes of paperwork. The introduction of paperless systems (from diaries to employee databases) have freed HR employees from the burden of this. Whilst there will always be an element of filing to the job, online forms and email trails mean that HR employees won’t always be stuck under a mound of paper.
Despite all of these technological advances, HR always has required a face-to-face, ‘human’ approach. The technology simply enables talented employees to do their jobs to an even better standard.
