Why Choose Conveyancing?
30 June 2017
With so many disciplines within the legal market, it can often be difficult to decide on a niche path to pursue. You may well excel at one strand of law over another but there are no guarantees that you will be able to find a job in that particular field. If you are looking for a career that will be challenging, interesting and satisfying, choosing the conveyancing market is the best way to achieve this.
There are many different elements to the job that make it an incredibly rewarding one, including:
- The many different clients you will encounter during the year.
- The high standard of professionalism and attention to detail required.
- The use of many aspects of law (contract, property, litigation, wills, probate).
Conveyancing can be a truly varied job, where no two days are the same. You can easily segue from helping a young, first time buyer to helping a businessperson add to their property portfolio. There is also the ability to get to utilise several different legal disciplines – there is a large crossover between conveyancing and other strands of law.
Conveyancing offers the chance for relatively swift career progression and there are opportunities from entry-level law graduates to fully qualified solicitors and licensed conveyancers. The more experience you gain, the more opportunities you are likely to come across, including “training and development, management level roles and client relationship management”.
Licensed conveyancers can work in a wide range of companies and businesses – from specialist conveyancing firms to local authority housing associations.
It’s a market that is also waking up to the needs of its candidates. In order to attract the brightest and best, many employers are now offering better salaries or benefits (in the past, this was reserved for long-standing employees only). This includes perks such as flexitime or part-time hours. As the Scottish market is relatively small, reputation speaks for itself and many companies are doing all they can to ensure that their staff and clients are satisfied with their experiences.
It is often a fast-paced job, where you will be expected to handle several caseloads at once, but this is where your well-honed organisational skills and ability to keep cool under pressure will come in to play. It’s also a position that demands perfection on legal documents to avoid claims of professional negligence. However, the face-to-face client element of the job often makes it worthwhile – especially when you get to play a part in their joy at securing their “dream home”.
Conveyancing is a market that suits those candidates who are methodical and like to keep busy. If you enjoy interacting with colleagues and clients alike, this is certainly a career path to consider. Being technically accurate across a wide range of legal knowledge is also an advantage.
