9 Stages of a Job Search

No doubt, at some point in your career, you’ve found yourself “in between” jobs (I think that’s the correct euphemism). It’s an uncertain time, one that can be categorised by extreme highs and lows. Some days, you feel really productive and get lots of applications filled in and phone calls made. Other days, it’s 2pm and you’re still in your pyjamas watching Jeremy Kyle.

Yes, you’re out of your routine and your comfort zone. The joy at getting an interview can quickly be replaced by the misery of a knock back.

Here are the many stages of looking for a new job.

Relaxation

You’ve earned a few days off. You’re quite happy to just sit and take a few days to do … well, nothing. It’s nice not being in work clothes and being able to stay up late on a school night.

Productivity

Now that you’ve had a few days to do nothing, the hard work starts. You fire up the laptop, create a snazzy new CV and get applying for every job under the sun.

Lack of funds

It’s been a while since payday and your last wage is starting to dwindle. You cut back on extra treats and nights out and swear to live a life of nothing but the essential.

Boredom

A direct result of lack of funds, your social life has gone out the window. You can no longer join your mates for a cheeky post-work pint because you’re making a fiver stretch till next week.

Outright panic

Okay, it’s now been a couple of weeks and you’ve not heard back from any of your applications. Shouldn’t you have been invited to interview by now? Or at least received an email?

Interview Fear

What’s worse, not getting an interview or finding yourself preparing for one? What should you wear, what will they ask, how challenging will it be? Eek.

Rejection Fear

It’s a different type of fear to the previous kind, but it’s no less terrifying. Did you not answer the questions well enough? Did you not laugh enough at their jokes? WHAT HAPPENED IN THERE?

More Interview Fear

Round two. Same fear, different location. At least you can use last time as practice and try to learn from any potential errors.

Joy

DID THEY HONESTLY JUST SAY YES?! You feel like Sally Field at the Oscars. Out of all the other candidates, they like you – they really like you! The job search is over. You can breathe again.
