A reliable and motivated legal secretary forms the heart of any firm. Believe me when I say, if things aren’t running smoothly, you’ll notice. It’s so important to recruit the right candidate in terms of skills set and cultural fit to take up such an essential position within your firm.

That’s why I believe it’s important to invest properly in filling such a role. It’s not easily done. A good legal secretary will keep things running smoothly – in terms of meetings, paperwork and correspondence – to such a high standard that you won’t have to worry about much more than being in the right meeting at the right time. They are a really valuable asset to any firm that wishes to operate efficiently.

It’s why, when I am recruiting a candidate for a firm, I do my research. I will always pop in for a chat to get a feel for two things: What you expect from a legal secretary and how your firm operates on a daily basis. This is absolutely crucial when it comes to blending recruiting for a cultural fit and the level of skills and experience required.

This is becoming increasingly important now that the lines between a legal secretary and an Executive Assistant are become blurred in many firms. Responsibilities are changing.

Traditionally, a legal secretary would be responsible for tasks such as typing up legal documents, making appointments with clients, performing legal research and attending court. Now, many firms in the East coast of Scotland are also looking for candidates who can perform duties such as diary management or taking on email correspondence on behalf of a partner whilst they are at court.

There is now even a crossover between legal sectors, with secretaries now able to seamlessly transition from working in private sector to litigation or conveyancing, owing to the similar work load and pace.

It very much depends on each individual firm, but it is important to know what you are looking for when you are recruiting a legal secretary. More modern graduates may well expect to take on a role that is more similar to an EA but also undertakes more traditional tasks such as audiotyping.

A good legal secretary can ‘make or break’ a business. That’s why I like to act almost as an addition to an in-house HR team when I help you find the right candidate for the job. I like to understand how your firm operates so that I can thoroughly prepare a potential employee for life of the job. I want them to be able to hit the ground running so that any transitional periods within your business go smoothly.
