It’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week this week so we’re offering a big shout out for those who have knuckled down and are already making great inroads in their career through an apprenticeship.

Choosing to undertake an apprenticeship can be the first step to a bright future – as so many successful candidates have shown. It will be hard working and a steep learning curve, but the rewards far outweigh any challenges.

On the job training is invaluable these days, so why not sharpen your skills set and get paid for it at the same time?

There are more than 80 types of Modern Apprenticeships across hundreds of job sectors. You can also work towards a qualification of your choice.

We take a look at just some of the reasons why you should consider a Modern Apprenticeship as we celebrate all the hard-working apprentices across Scotland this week.

The experience

Working whilst you’re learning means you can really enhance your skills set so that it includes all the technical aspects of a job that an employer will look for. It will also give you a taste of the responsibilities and freedoms of working life – from making sure you turn up on time to receiving that all important wage packet.

An alternative

The school system is not for everyone. Modern Apprenticeships provide a valid and valuable alternative to those who want a life beyond the classroom. By learning on the job, you can put your knowledge to the test straight away and you don’t have to spend all year studying for a subject that you’re simply not interested in.

Real qualifications

Whatever you work towards during your Modern Apprenticeship, your qualification will be recognised by the Scottish Qualifications Authority – that’s the same examination body that is responsible for National 4s and 5s and Highers. So not only will you have learned new skills, you’ll have something to show for it at the end of your training.

The right training

Apprenticeships are designed with specific employers and industries in mind. That means that everything you learn is relevant to your career and is something that any future employers will be looking for on your CV. Your time won’t be wasted as everything is geared towards arming you with the best set of skills possible to further your career.

The pay

For undertaking any Modern Apprenticeship, the National Minimum Wage must be met. Whilst it might not be the six-figure salary you dream of, it’s money in your pocket. It will teach you to budget your wages and stand you in good stead for when a full-time salary kicks in.

If you think you might be interested in a Modern Apprenticeship, you should definitely pay a visit to the Skills Development Scotland website, where you can see what types of qualifications available and in what sectors of industry.

Good luck.
