More

No doubt, at some point in your illustrious career, you have found yourself sitting in a meeting, listening to the higher echelons preach about “reaching out”, “thinking outside the box” and “skillbase”.

You’ve probably wondered what on earth they were talking about.

Office buzzwords mean that meetings – sorry, thought showers – are often littered with unnecessary jargon that translates to little or no meaning.

You absolutely can’t bring yourself to utter these words – you’d sound ridiculous, right? We asked around and have come up with a list of annoying office buzzwords that need to disappear now.

Touch base

This phrase makes us shiver. It sounds weirdly sinister.

Synergy

As does this word. It sounds like the name of an evil chemical corps.

Moving the needle

Just say you want to provoke a reaction. Don’t be that guy.

Low hanging fruit

This translates in to: the most easily achievable set of goals.

Cascading information

Or you could literally say: Chat to your colleagues. Share ideas. Jeez.

Best practice

This is the most effective way of doing something. Ironic, huh?

Core competency

It sounds like a gym circuit, not a person’s best skills.

Action that

Or you could say ‘do that’ – it’s less letters and everything.

via GIPHY

Drill down

Wow. An analogy. Sure, I’ll find out more information.

Run it up the flagpole

Where does this even come from? It means to try something out.

Guestimate

You’re either guessing or estimating. You can’t do both.

Elevator pitch

Think Dragon’s Den – a short pitch you could do in the time it takes a lift to go up or down.

Helicopter view

A broad view of the business. Obviously.

Strategic Staircase

Oh, for goodness sake, just say business plan.

Upskilling

Teaching a person new skills.

Cross-pollinating best practice

We’re … We’re lost for words. Apparently this means telling a colleague the best way to do things. Wow.
